Overview
The Annunciation Cathedral is one of the most recognisable churches in Kharkiv and one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in Ukraine. Its neo-Byzantine facade of striking red-and-white stripes and a bell tower nearly 80 metres tall can be seen from afar. The cathedral was consecrated in 1901; inside are the relics of saints and an impressive iconostasis.
The cathedral stands on Blahovishchenska Square, beside the Central Market (locals call it ‘Blahbaz’). The nearest metro station is Tsentralnyi Rynok on the Kholodnohirsko-Zavodska (red) Line; from there it is about a 5-minute walk to the cathedral across the bridge over the Lopan River. Remember it is a working church — dress modestly and keep quiet during services.
