Overview
Freedom Square (Maidan Svobody) is the main square of Kharkiv and one of the largest city squares in Europe — almost 12 hectares. Its architectural centrepiece is Derzhprom (the House of State Industry), built in 1925–1928 as the first Soviet ‘skyscraper’ and a recognised masterpiece of Constructivism that has long been proposed for UNESCO World Heritage status. Facing it stands the ensemble of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.
Derzhprom metro station on the Oleksiivska (green) Line exits right at the foot of the building, while the neighbouring Universytet station on the Saltivska (blue) Line brings you out at the northern side of the square — the two are joined by an underground passage. Because of the war some fountains and features on the square may be switched off, but the space itself is open and its sheer scale is striking.
