Overview

Constitution Square is the oldest square in Kharkiv and the start of the historic centre. It holds the Monument of Independence (‘Flying Ukraine’), and right beside it rises the 89-metre bell tower of the Dormition (Uspensky) Cathedral, one of the city’s emblems. A few minutes further stands the Pokrovsky Monastery (1689), the oldest stone building in Kharkiv.

This is where the Sumska pedestrian street begins, with its theatres and cafes, and a ten-minute stroll away is the famous Mirror Stream pavilion fountain by the opera house. Maidan Konstytutsii station on the red line exits straight onto the square; next to it, via a passage, is Istorychnyi Muzei station on the blue line, above which stands the city’s main history museum.
